Implementation of a Hybrid Operating Room for Cardiac Surgery at Victoria’s Children’s Hospital:
Project and Change Management Challenge
Your final assignment will be a culmination of both the art and science of project management within
the complimentary disciplines of project and change management. You should explore multiple
perspectives of leadership, project managers (team leads) and end-users.
Please prepare and be prepared to present a 20-minute presentation and report for the Sainte-Justine
Hospital case study. Each team is to consider that they have been hired by a major hospital in Victoria
that is considering creating a hybrid children’s cardiac surgical unit (similar to the one created by SainteJustine University Hospital) combining the current separate cardiac surgical and catheterization units
that are in separate wings of the hospital. As a consulting firm your team is asked to complete the
following:
1. Conduct a detailed analysis as to how the project was initiated, planned, executed, monitored
and closed-out. You may wish to address a number of the following questions in addition to any
other areas you feel are appropriate:
a. What was the need for this change initiative?
b. Did they select the right solution?
c. Was there a sense of urgency for this change initiative?
2. Conduct a review of the governance structures (oversight and decision making) that were used
to complete this change initiative. You may wish to address various organizational levels such as
the strategic and tactical levels of the change initiative.
3. Conduct an assessment with respect to whether the three basic components of any effective
change were in place:
a. Communications;
b. End-user involvement; and
c. Stakeholder support and or training.
4. Identify what can be learned from this change initiative and make recommendations as to what
could be improved should a similar project be undertaken in the future.
