For your discussion, complete the following steps:

  • Watch the video entitled, The Magic of the Unconscious: Automatic Brain (Links to an external site.).
  • Select a “hot topic” of cognitive psychology based on what you have heard and/or seen in the media and your personal interests.
  • Look for a report in the media (e.g., newspapers, magazines, web pages of professional organizations, etc.) that refers to the selected topic such as “defendant cannot remember what happened,” “false memories explain UFO abduction stories,” and so forth.
  • Describe the content of the selected report and offer your own perspective. Namely, use your critical-thinking skills to examine the extent to which the claims made in the report and the evidence upon which the report relies are to be trusted. Then, discuss the real-life consequences of the evidence reported.

In your post, include a link to the selected report, and explain to the members of the class why you have selected it. Support your points with evidence from at least one peer-reviewed research article. Your post must be a minimum of 300 words

Hello Class,

The ‘Hot Topic’ that I chose to discuss is schizophrenia. In my senior year of high school in AP Psychology, we were given this same prompt to do a project over, and schizophrenia is the subject that I chose. I learned so much about mental health, behavior problems, thoughts, and problems that one with schizophrenia may experience. If I can search back far enough I will find the PowerPoint project I completed and share it below. I had so much fun researching this topic. “Cognitive psychology is the subdiscipline of psychology that employs the scientific method to answer fundamental questions about how the mind works. By using controlled research (mostly experiments), cognitive psychologists attempt to explain the thinking processes that we use every day.” (Robinson-Riegler B., & Robinson-Riegler, G. L. 2012). People who suffer from schizophrenia may suffer from isolation, self-harm, trouble with behavior or speech.

“Patients with schizophrenia have a particularly low level of insight into their illness compared to people with other mental health disorders [1]. This aspect of insight, termed neurocognitive insight, is described as the “awareness of neuropsychological dysfunction”.Additionally, SCC was more frequently reported in patients with schizophrenia compared to healthy controls . Few studies have shown that neither in patients with schizophrenia nor in stable controls, subjective cognitive impairment scores were associated
with objective cognition ” (Haddad, et all 2021).

Hello class,

A topic that I ran across through was Cognitive Therapy which is defined as, “focuses on the mental processes behind the behavior rather than on the behavior itself” (Better Help, 2021). This then led me onto Cognitive Behavioral Therapy which is, “is a short-term form of behavioral treatment. It helps people problem-solve. CBT also reveals the relationship between beliefs, thoughts, and feelings, and the behaviors that follow” (goodtherapy.org). The article I began to read, FDA Authorizes Marketing of a VR System to Treat Chronic Lower Back Pain is about was how chronic back pain has led to anxiety and depression. With, it is understandable how this was an option that was created to better treat patients and to ease up on the use of medication and the eventual abuse/misuse due to the pain. The FDA has approved for a virtual reality (VR) which according to the article, “The device to designed to be used at home, and consists of three parts: the headset, controller, and a ‘Breathing Amplifier,’ which is used during deep breathing exercises. The device’s VR program uses established principles of behavioral therapy techniques such as deep relaxation and attention-shifting to aid in pain relief. This reading tied in with the three elements of structuralism which are sensations, feelings and images. The sensation of the back pain, the feeling of depression thinking it will never get better and the image of seeing yourself not being able to do the things you love. With the VR, the feeling of hope, the sensation of happiness and functionality and the image of having a “normal life” may seem viable. I feel this article is an important/interesting read because this option might seem that it is working but might ultimately be an illusion and give false hope to a patient. But if that is the case and it is working, then it might be a great investment for yourself or someone you know.
