Social Issues in Dance
Jose Limon’ choreographed The Moor’s Pavane, which was based off of Shakespeare’s Othello. If you were to choreograph a dance based on a social issue that is important to you in our current society what would you create? List the title of the piece and describe the narrative, music choice and costumes that you would select.
If you can find a link for everyone to listen to your music choice that would be helpful so that everyone can hear where your idea is going.

Alvin Ailey – Revelations
From the video excerpts, what is your favorite section of Alvin Ailey’s Revelations and why? How were you affected and would you go to see a live performance?
Please note that the dance “Revelations” and “Cry” are two separate pieces. Do not combine the two in your selection. Write solely about one of the sections in “Revelations.”

If I was to choreograph a dance based on a social issue that is important to me I would choreograph a dance based on child abuse. child abuse is a vital issue in today’s world that remains untackled and dishonorably. The title of this piece would be “SCAN” which is the short term for Stop Child Abuse Now. The dance would be them basically telling a story with their mouths covered up with one hand while the other shields their face. For the second part of the dance, they would have adults shouting while the children lay flat on the stage frustrated. Lastly, I would show the outcome of child abuse by showing a casket and on the other end a child in a corner with other children holding up words around the individual such as low self-esteem, depression, fear, and anxiety. The music choice would be A Prayer For The Children – Dear Mr.Jesus. I chose this song because it was actually made for the awareness of child abuse and it would also go great with my choreograph. To add on I would also have children dressed in white with fingerprints in red on their clothes. The red would signify a sign of abuse. Not only that I would also put children’s clothes on the floor for children who passed away because of child abuse.

If I were to choreograph a dance based on an important social issue, I would base it on Domestic Violence. Nearly 1 in 3, or 30%, of women, are subjected to domestic violence in relationships. Domestic violence is an important topic that is not dealt with and is just ignored. Throughout the dance, she will tell her story of how she left an abusive relationship. I would start the dance with a woman standing alone in a room wearing an old, brown dress. She would feel relieved that her partner is not there to torment her. Her partner comes in and she is visibly afraid and worried for herself. It gets physical and she does her best to protect herself. It goes on with her fighting her ground to escape from her abusive partner. The music choice would be a poem on domestic violence written by Mari The poet named ” Domestic Violence”. The dialogue in the poem would be the same spoken by the women being abused and her abuser. I chose this poem because it is very powerful and revealing of how a woman feels in a situation like that. In the end, the women would be dressed in Blue. I chose the color blue since it often symbolizes freedom, justice, and peace which would be some of the emotions the women would feel after being freed from Domestic Violence.

The dance piece “Revelations” by Alvin Ailey was one of the most beautiful pieces of dance I have seen. The costumes correlated with the message being brought out and onto the audience. The performers’ dance gestures were very sharp and neat. There are a variety of turns and high jumps that just adds more emotion to the dance. The dancers are in sync and match their movements with the music choice perfectly. I would love to attend a live performance. If you can feel emotions through a video, then it is even better in a live performance. Those twists and turns would look great, as well as the dancer’s sharp movements.

I didn’t have a favorite part. I liked all of it. Utilizing African-American spirituals, melody lessons, gospel tunes, and heavenly blues, Alvin Ailey’s Revelations intensely investigates the spots of most unimaginable distress and holiest euphoria in the spirit. Something other than a famous dance work, it has turned into a social fortune, adored by ages of fans. The “Pilgrim of Sorrow,” was portrayed by dancers for people who hope for salvation disregarding life’s troubles. The developments that propose coming toward paradise and being pulled back to earth. I think Alvin Ailey’s Revelations was unique and how each part plays a role by telling a story. I wish I was actually there in person.

If I could go back in history, I would want to be a Jazz dancer like Bob Fosse. A few reasons that I would want to be a Jazz dancer because I find that I enjoy Jazz music much more than music that Tap dancers use. I would want to dance and move to the kind of music that I listen to more just because I find it more enjoyable. Bob Fosse made an impact in the Jazz dance world. He was a choreographer who changed musicals with his style of movement. He used props, lights, signature moves in his choreography. Fosse’s movement and style was notable for comedic storylines. I would want my style to be as light and help tell a story in a comedic light if it meant having a fun time.

If I could travel back in time, I’d choose a tap dancer like the Nicholas Brothers. The Nicholas Brothers are one of the finest tap dance artists of all time because of their sharpness, strength, and flexibility. Combining jazz dance, ballet, and dazzling acrobatics with tap dance was one of their unique skills. Even now, their talent is unrivaled, and I find their work and legacy to be an amazing testament to the power of dedication and hard work. Despite the challenges posed by racial prejudice, these two extraordinary dancers have garnered respect for their talent and recognition for their distinctive approach to dance. It was a lovely pleasure to watch the Nicholas Brothers perform, and I would definitely love to try it. Each movement has grace, yet it is also so intricate which help to demonstrate their talent and competence. I admire their incredible abilities and unique mix, which demonstrates how detailed and beautiful the dance truly is.
